Justice isn’t always right. And some crimes aren’t wrong. But where does that leave us? And the people caught between the two? The Gulf is about the moral disintegration of Detective Jess Savage, who finds herself in exactly that place as she investigates crimes on her home of Waiheke Island, New Zealand. After losing her memory in a car crash that killed her husband, Jess becomes determined to bring the killer to justice. Convinced that someone is trying to kill her because of something she has uncovered in a recent investigation, she in effect begins investigating herself, retracing her steps over the weeks prior. As her colleagues become increasingly uncooperative Jess’ paranoia really sets in, whilst she also starts to fight an addiction to morphine. As she gets closer to the truth she so desperately seeks, Jess discovers that her world is not so morally black and white. The personal story of Jess and the revelation of it to her and the audience is complex and intriguing, which dovetails seamlessly with three intriguing criminal cases that have a major impact on her career.
1. NATHAN Part 1
Where has Nathan been all these years? Detective Jess Savage struggles to understand how they could have got it so wrong the first time round. At least throwing herself into the case means she doesn’t have to think about Alex’s death. Harding is introduced to Waiheke. Ruby welcomes Jess home.
2. NATHAN Part 2
Who and where is Lucy? Nathan’s father and psychologist close ranks. Jess is running out of time. Bennington sizes up Harding. Harding has a hair of the dog. Jess confronts the police mechanic about her accident. Ruby provides pain relief and deletes some texts.
3. BODY OF WATER Part 1
Max wants answers about his missing daughter. Jess hangs out while Harding seems at home with the Waiheke party set. Denise comes clean about one of the locals. Ruby has some news. Something gruesome is discovered in the mangroves.
4. BODY OF WATER Part 2
Jess talks to dead bodies. Susan Bridges outs Harding. AJ tells Jess about the games boys play. Ruby goes missing. Bennington lends Rory a hand.
5. SECRETS Part 1
Bennington asks for Jess’s help. Koro gives instructions (and an eel) to Jess. Hoani’s family want the return of his body. Jess pieces together her lost memories of the accident and comes clean to Ruby. Harding goes to prison. Ronan is taken for a drive.
I LOVE this show. I am so hoping season 2 is on the way. No shocking ending until the ending. HAS to be a season 2!
I loved that it was filmed in NZ - I was looking at every detail. I binged the six episodes all in one day.
It was watchable, pulled me in to how it was resolved. Above average but not excellent. 4 stars maybe
Hope there is another season!
Please continue the show. Love anything from New Zealand
