Valentine Road

Valentine Road

Directed by Marta Cunningham

On February 12th 2008, in the working class town of Oxnard, California, 14-year-old Brandon McInerney shot his eighth grade classmate, 15-year-old Lawrence “Larry” King twice in the back of the head during first period English class, while the entire class watched. Larry died two days later. A media frenzy followed – spinning the wild tale of a flamboyantly gay Lolita pushing the buttons of a raging white supremacist bully too far. Eventually the traditional news media moved on. Left in its wake was a shell-shocked small town community having to answer big questions. What exactly is society to do with someone like Brandon? What measures can be enacted to protect LGBTQ kids like Larry King?

The tragic killing of 14-year-old Lawrence King, a gay adolescent who was experimenting with gender presentation, by his classmate, made national headlines in a time when bullying and LGBTQ hate crimes were finally beginning to be taken seriously

A really good issue to bring light to. As good as this documentary was I had an incredibly hard time getting through it and literally yelled at the sreen more than once. That school and the majority of the adults are disgustingly intolerant and ignorant. That poor boy had finally found happiness and become comfortable to be himself. Not once did Brandon say to Larry, a friend of Larry's or anyone that he didn't want Larry to approach him or hit on him or that anything bithered him but he did tell a friend of Larry's that he was going to get rid of him. So clearly he is able to speak his mind. All the victim blaming made me sick. That one teacher that now works at Starbucks is an amazing human and I hope that things turn around for her. So many ypung people's lives needlessly affected by such an unnecessary tragedy. Pay attention to the news after Brandon is released cause I'm sure this won't be his last horrendous crime

Everybody in this is Homophobic...and basically was saying "thats what he got" and that he shouldve known better...because they didnt care that Larry's life was over...they was so worried that the shooter would still have a life instead
