After the police investigation into the fatal hit-and-run of her young son is dropped, Frances Cairnes (Cush Jumbo) takes matters into her own hands. She ingratiates herself with the family of George Rattery (Jared Harris), the cruel, pompous man she suspects is responsible, and plots to kill him. But when troubled detective Nigel Strangeways (Billy Howle) throws himself into pursuing justice for the boy, he ends up working both to prove George's guilt and head off Frances's plans for revenge.
