Cul de Sac: A Suburban War Story

Cul de Sac: A Suburban War Story

Directed by Garrett Scott

In May 1995, Shawn Nelson, a 35 year-old plumber and methamphetamine abuser, stole a tank from a nearby National Guard armory and went on a rampage through the residential streets of his neighborhood until the cops took him down. This stranger than fiction doc goes far beyond this apparently minor news story and provides political, economic and social context that ties Nelson's life to the larger story of a working class community in decline.

I had one major question that the film never addressed: HOW DID THIS GUY GET A HOLD OF A TANK ??Also, I think we only see one quick photo of the guy. Is that all they had ? It was a good idea for a doc, but their footage was very limited - thus all the time spent showing very tangential footage of San Diego & Korea. That was a big stretch guys. In answer to alyoshakaramazov, I don't think the film is blaming society. They were trying to show the influences that would likely affect someone's behavior. Life doesn't happen in a vacuum. Otherwise, why do an investigation of anything ??
