Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart

Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart

Directed by Jeremiah Zagar

A small-town murder in New England became one of the highest-profile cases of the twentieth century. As the first fully televised court case, the Pamela Smart trial rattled the consciousness of America. From gavel to gavel, a nation tuned in, and reality TV was born. Pulsating with sex, drugs, betrayal, and murder, the trial inspired 20 years of television shows, books, plays, and movies, including To Die For, starring Nicole Kidman.

Juror #13 spoke to me, and I don't doubt that the media influenced the jury. I saw the Nicole Kidman movie, it's always stuck out in my head for some reason. Although it knew it was dramatized, I assumed the verdict was based on enough evidence to convict beyond a reasonable doubt. I have reasonable doubt if even 1/4 of the information in this film is true. This should be looked into. Life without parole is a pretty severe sentence for sleeping with a teenager. The adultry can be easily forgiven, especially considering the spouse's infidelity
