Close to Home |
A coming of age story set against the social lives of young Israeli female soldiers, CLOSE TO HOME sets the Israel-Palestine conflict in the background.
The two central characters, Mirit and Smadar, are thrown together by their commanding officer, and are made responsible for stopping Arabs on the streets of Jerusalem for IDs. But Smadar and Mirit couldn't be more different. The two remain unfriendly until a bomb explosion creates a tenuous bond of friendship.
"Gentle reminder of how the simple act of being human is among the first - and most lamented - casualties of war." - Seymour, Newsday
"The emotional preoccupations of late female adolescence don't square easily with the experience of being a soldier in contemporary Israel, and it's the sensitive, subtle depiction of this incongruity that gives this lovely film such an unexpectedly fresh point of view." - Wisniewski, IndieWIRE |
