Albatross |
| ALBATROSS is a contemporary comedy drama about a 17 year old girl – EMELIA – who starts working at a B&B on the South Coast of England. The Cliff House is run by the dysfunctional Fischer family. Bookish daughter BETH is desperate to escape the small town and her warring family. Wife JOA now runs the house that author husband JONATHAN bought with earnings from his first book as a B&B. Having begun as a fun diversion from raising her family, the B&B is now a necessary source of income for them as Jonathan’s publishing deals have dried up. Witty, cheeky, force of nature Emelia is an aspiring writer, believing she is following in the footsteps of her great grandfather Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle. Jonathan sees promise in Emelia and begins to tutor her. Their relationship quickly crosses the pupil/teacher line and they embark on a secret affair. At the same time, Emelia and Beth strike up a surprise friendship: Emelia’s free spirit helps Beth learn to let her hair down and Emelia is inspired by Beth’s determination and focus. As Beth’s friendship becomes more crucial to Emelia she becomes the first person in whom Emelia confides the tragic truth of her family history. Emelia realises that it would destroy her new best friend if Beth discovered Jonathan and Emelia’s affair. So whilst Emelia is trying desperately to extricate herself from this relationship, the affair is inevitably discovered by Joa and the family unit explodes. But perhaps this is the best thing that could have happened to them. And Emelia may have lost her friendship with Beth but it is clear the time they spent together will have changed them forever for the better. Emelia is reconciled with her grandfather and comes to terms with the truth of her family history, getting rid of the Albatross that has hung around her neck and becoming a writer on her own terms. |
