“Found footage” comes in a variety of forms: newsreels, educational films, home movies and more. This month, we showcase eight films that make memorable use of it. Director Alan Berliner employs his private collection to enliven four films: FAMILY ALBUM (about home movies); INTIMATE STRANGER (about his maternal grandfather); NOBODY’S BUSINESS (about his stubborn father); and THE SWEETEST SOUND (about his obsession with names). Director Kevin Rafferty uncovers the 40-year-old broadcast from one of the most exciting sports games ever played in HARVARD BEATS YALE 29-29. Footage from state archives create a profound record in SWASTIKA and THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NICOLAE CEAUSESCU; while old auto safety films make for hilarious viewing in HELL’S HIGHWAY. |
